History

Our humble beginnings

USThing began as an all-in-one student mobile app, providing convenient access to a variety of on-campus services for HKUST students since 2015. In 2024, we formally established a structured organisational framework to enhance our offerings.


Today, our team composes of students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds, all working together to address the evolving needs of our vibrant student community.


  • The Beginning
    USThing was founded by HKUST student Zachary Lo.
  • Bringing USThing to Students
    We launched our app in iOS and Android.
  • Building Our Team
    We were adopted by Prof. Kar Yan Tam as his 25A project, and we started our first campus recruitment.
  • Friendship and Beyond
    We launched the Valentine's campaign in hopes of building relationships among peers.
  • Go Green
    We kick-started the USTree campaign, aimed to print less and promote sustainable living.
  • Launched the USThing Web Dashboard on app.usthing.xyz
    Included classic features such as Room Booking, Calendar, and Grade Calculator on the student web dashboard, but also released a brand new feature: the Study Pathway Planner.
  • Beyond the mobile apps
    Our future plans align with the vision of empowering students, bringing together diverse minds, and providing a platform for students to shape our university experience and pursue our passions.
